There are two type of bankruptcies: Chapter 7  and Chapter 13.

Chapter 7:  Considered liquidation bankruptcy , petitions the court to help dispel debts. In this case the court will then appoint you a trustee , this trustee will then take possession of the assets that are not exempt. These assets will be put into a liquidation sale and the proceeds will be divided among your creditors.

Chapter 13: is known as a reorganization bankruptcy. In this case you petition the court to protect all assests of yours while you obtain further time to repay creditors. This form of bankruptcy usuually requires you to have a steady and stable income. Your bankruptcy lawyer will then file a plan which details how you intend to repay all creditors owed, which often has an option to repay some creditors less than originally owed. This plan must then be approved by the court.
